can the three drives be in raid 0? :)
very nice but waiting to see what the 18.4" machine looks like

There can be, all you will have to do is swap the RAID array through the storage manager before installing Windows.

It made me lol a bit too, just built a big core i7 system on a gigabyte x58 motherboard, and that can't boot from raid 5, which does have a performance overhead.

Novatech will be the UK's first e-tailer to put Nvidia's GTX280M and GTX260M graphics (and Intel's Core i7) into a laptop.

Hi Amy

X90 Spec looks good - except the only disappointment is :

Screen 17" WSXGA 1680 x 1050 TFT!

How come the lower end X models have a higher spec 1900x1200 - For a top-of the range powerhouse X90, a non HD spec LCD seems strange - Any other models in the pipeline?

Regards

Thanks Fozza - I thought that looked odd when I first saw!

Now should I go for one of these, or an Asus W90vp ...? ;)

w90vp in this country will only have a single 4870, albeit with 1gb ram, unlike across the pond where they get a 4870x2...

get the clevo...

Core i7 in a laptop!!! :O. Someone's not gonna be having babies...

Yeah I also hear that Asus dropped the Quad Core for P9550 (not even P9600), and the drives are 5400rpm... UK are often poor cousins to US speccced machines.. (also happened with Asus G71V).

My gut reaction to the X90 (whilst waiting to see some UK reviews) is that it could do with some more memory (6Gb) for that price-point (£26xx), and I would rather perhaps one or two SSDs and 500Gb 7200 drive for storage as 3 x 64Mb isn't very useful for media, and I wouldn't want to lug an additional external hard drive. It would be nice to have an option to customise these.

What I will say however is that the i7 940 is a definite 'yes' for 3D rendering :agree: (if it weren't for the memory limitation). Also nVidia mobile GPUs tend to have less compatibility issues with Adobe CS3/4, Vue, Lightwave, Poser etc. Not sure how 280 compares with 4870 elsewhere..?

As for "laptop" ... definite desktop replacement. This baby is definitely not going to be kind on the 'crown-jewels'...

(Hoping Novatech updates the X90 quickly to reflect the 1900x1200 res spec - 1650 x 1080 will definitely put people off - unless they think to search the forums)

Cheers :drink:

The core i7 really is a great processor, and the x90 is based on a clevo design that has been around ages, in fact they have moved back to desktop processor in a notebook after going mobile with dual GPU's

SLI is great but not always necessary, I beleive that the gtx280m may prove good enough, giving you better processor and ram capabilities

one tip, Raid 5 as a system drive actually has a high performance overhead
raid 0 that thing and it will fly, or do a single drive plus a raid 1 mirror for backups
depending on how you want to look after your data

Vista 64 on a raid1 can get itself in a tizzle quite easily especially if you have a bad install or uninstall that requires a forced reboot! :)

I suppose what we are waiting for is the M890 Clevo 18.4" system :)

It is a misprint 1920x1200 is the res on the new units

Corr, what a machine. Absolutely lunacy, I bet the batteries don't last long if your gaming :P. Got to admit though, buy one of those and you admit that computers are a high priority thing in your life :P.

Im not entirely sure but... the hd 4850 mobile runs the same spec as the 4850 bar speeds yes? meaning it has the full 800 sp's etc?? Well.. the mobile gtx280 looks to me like a slower clocked gts250 desktop part and if this is the case is it going to as fast as people would expect with it being called the "gtx280"? Once again i think nvidias naming is a little off, atleast a few years ago if a laptop had a 7900gtx it had a 7900gtx all be it with slow clocks. Now nvidia seem to be calling any old unit the best in the bunch just to keep the unaware happy. So upshot is, is this laptop going to be good enough to justify its £x00's more than the *anom* with its 4850m gpu?

I thought it was obviously differntiated with the m(obile) moniker. It would make sense that the mobile cards would be not as powerful since they are jammed into the notebook chasis versus a desktop case - desktop card power and thermal requirements are far too high. I'm shocked that the mobile version of the 4850 is the same...are you totally sure of this?

Oddly enough the notebook supports desktop processors...

Yes I'm sure the 4850m is the same as the desktop part with regards to sp's etc just slower clocks! And as for the mobile gtx280, it looks to me like a 8800gts 512mb rather than the older 96sp versions. But then again, the old 8800gtx m had only 96sp's and the 9800gtx m had 112sp's making it more like the 8800/9800gt out of your desktop... Little deceiving...

yep, have read somewhere on the asus w90vp with its 4870/4870x2 its the same as the desktop card, just slower clocks too. Hence it's mega 3dmark06 scores - someone on XS got his over 20k!!
