What is HDMI?

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is an audio and video interface for transmitting digital multi channel audio and video streams through one cable from an HDMI compatible device like a graphics card or games console to an HDMI input device like an HDTV.

More on HDMI can be found here.

What is so good about HDMI?

The advantage of using HDMI rather DVI or VGA is that an HDMI cable can transfer digital audio and digital video signals through the one cable, DVI and VGA cables will only carry a video signal (dvi = digital video, vga = analogue video) so if your connecting your PC to your TV you would need a second cable to transfer sound.

Below is the heirachy in order of video quality best to worst:

1. DVI or HDMI (digital)
2. VGA or Component (analogue)
3. S-Video (analogue)
4. Composite (through RCA connections) (analogue)

How to use HDMI audio?

(For nVIDIA-based graphics cards)

1.Through Internal SPDIF cable: (As Pic #1)

Step a. Use the internal SPDIF cable, plug one side of the cable into the SPDIF-in header on the graphics card.
Step b. Plug another side of the cable into the SPDIF-out header on the motherboard.

(Different motherboards may have different SPDIF connectors, please follow the instruction of the motherboard.) ** Red line is for signal (+), Black line is for ground (-).

2.Through external optical SPDIF cable: (As Pic #2)

Step a. Use the external optical SPDIF cable, plug one side of the cable into the SPDIF-out port on the back of the motherboard.
Step b. Plug another side of the cable into the SPDIF-in port of the graphics card.

After finish connecting the SPDIF cable, you also need to switch audio output to digital output in the operation system. (To know how to switch audio output, please refer the manual of the motherboard.)

(For ATI-based graphics cards)

Go to Realtek, grab download the "ATI HDMI Audio Device" Driver and install it.

Connect the HDMI Cable
Next right click on the volume icon in the system tray (by the time) and choose 'Playback Devices'.
Then right click on Realtek HDMI Output (ATi HDMI Audio), and select 'Set as Default Device'.

Note: My 'Set as Default Device' is grayed out since I don't have HDMI Connected at the moment, it will become available once you connect the card to a HDMI source.

***Most ATI cards with onboard 5.1 or 7.1 audio are dual DVI cards and come with a DVI to HDMI adapter that supports audio and video, you must use this adapter and an HDMI to HDMI cable. You can not use a DVI to HDMI cable if you want audio and video from the card to your display.***
