Can anyone confirm whether the previously stated maximum memory of 0.5Gb can be pushed up to 1Gb?
The spec is DDR SDRAM 200-Pin SODIMM PC2-700 333MHz Unbuffered Non-ECC.
I have found a 1Gb card of the same spec... BUT, would the BIOS recognise it?
Here's a link to the memory I found:

Thanks in advance

What do mean, "previously stated"? Are you sure you don't mean "installed". In my experience, as long as the chip fits, the bios will recognise it. Ergo, swap em over and your machine should see the 1gb ram.
However, dell have excellent customer support, and they do funny things with their kit, so drop them a line. Save you wasting 27 quid if there is something in the bios preventing recognition.

The Inspiron is one of those oddities has that has some of its RAM soldered directly to the motherboard. You should be OK with a 1Gb stick in the removeable slot, but bear in mind it will be set to the the same speed (266Mhz off the top of my head) as the non-removeable chip.
You should get 1Gb+ (- video memory) with a 200-pin PC 2700 memory upgrade. G-Skill chips are probably the best bet for Dells; good reports of compatibility and they won't break the bank, but I'm sure the stick you link to will work fine.

I just meant that Dell specified 0.5Gb MAX! But that was 4 or 5 years ago and I guess in the meantime memory has moved on.
Thanks for your suggestions, I'll drop them a line first.
