This is really annoying! I was working on my PC and wanted to play a video on my HDTV via my second DVI port, so I went into display properties, extended my desktop onto the TV (something I have done a thousand times before) but for some reason, when I pressed OK, the screen went blank on my primary monitor. Now, when I boot in normal mode, I get to the loading screen and as it is about to show the login screen (where I click my username) the screen goes blank and my monitor says that it has disconnected. My TV also shows no signal, but will show everything up until that point.

If I start XP in VGA mode or Safe mode, everything works as it should, but at the stupid resolution.

How can I use safe mode to tell my graphics card to just display on my monitor at a reasonable resolution? I can't see why it has not worked. I have tried rebooting, changing the port I plug the monitor/TV into and even taken the graphics card out in the hope of it resetting - but it didn't work.

as a last resort, you can do the following;

Boot in to safe mode
Go to device manager
uninstall the display adaptor (graphics card)
reboot as normal.

you will need to reinstall your drivers if it doesnt find them (or uses the windows ones instead)

there may be an easier way, but that is what i have done before.

What happens if you disconnect the telly and restart?
