Maxtor drive not formatting

Yesterday I purchased a brand new Maxtor 80gb (MAX-P80) hdd to go with my new system (BB-C51G55). My brother-in-law installed it and went to load XP on it... but after the format (NTFS) we kept getting this message ' setup was unable to format the partition. This disk may be damaged. [check cables etc] You must select a different partition for Windows XP'
We checked everything, cabling etc, and tried again and got the same message over and over...

unfortunately it looks like the drive may be faulty.

to confirm this you could try running powermax to check for errors and maxblast to partition the drive. both of these are available from the maxtor website. http://www.maxtor.com
