quite pleased with my bargain priced ipod which I have just put a new battery inside (£7 from Maplin)

as its a really old mark 1 model unit it only has 5gb hard disk, which I am finding isnt enough.

Do all ipods, N's own now discontinued Npod and HD based creative players, etc use the same style hard disks (1.8" I think they are?)

want to upgrade the drive, and may see if I can scour ebay or some boot sales for busted units with known good drives.

I'm not sure about the iPod's however the NPOD uses a standard Toshiba drive.

To be honest I think it would be okay to upgrade, however you may (more than likely) need a firmware upgrade. These units are okay to replace with a drive the same size (obviously if it's only out of warenty) but making them bigger could possibly cause all kinds of firmware issues.

With the iPod check with Apple. With an NPOD I'll do some investigating and see what comes up.

be carefull if u upgrade it, u might end up eating the battery if u put a newer drive in, they spin faster i think, try and find one that was sold around the same time as that ipod
