I'm running XP Pro at the moment but am upgrading some hardware so wondered if this is worth doing?

Getting some of my apps working on the vista lappy I have was a nightmare so am I going to end up tearing my hair out?

I was toying with running Windows 7 Beta but would welcome opinions :)

If you have a copy of Vista, use it, since SP1 it's been stable and has now got better support than xp

Iv never had a single problem with anything on vista 64. Ran perfectly from the day i got it, was after SP1 though.

I've ordered Home Premium 64 so I'll see how I get on with it. Do you think there will be a discounted upgrade path to Win7 for OEM versions?

I've got Vista 32 bit and 64 bit home premium. I went to 64bit after buying more ram to 4gb. I was thinking of using dual boot feature, and have 32 bit installed also, incase some program was incompatible. But I haven't had any problems at all with vista 64 bit. Great OS in my opinion.

Thanks, cje :)

The only thing I can potentially see myself having problems with is maybe getting my midisport device working on it... we shall see :)

EDIT: ****, I see MS still have that clause in the OEM EULA where you can't transfer to another mobo... I wanted to build an i7 rig next month :( Hrm, looks like I'll use Windows 7 beta until then I guess :D

Yeah, forgot to mention as well. I had a generic card reader connected to one of the internal USB ports. On installing vista 64 bit it didn't work, said windows cannot loadf drivers. Tried uninstalling it in device manager, nothing.

I then disconnected it, restarted, then connected it back in and when I switched the pc back on it found the card reader and it worked fine.

The public beta versions of Win 7 RC 1 will expire starting from march 2010 and wont last longer than June same year, so I dont think the full version will be out before then.

Microsoft would be stupid not to release Windows 7 before 2010. Its basically ready for release now, I've been using the RC1 for the past two weeks and its been perfect. I can't see why they'd sit on it for another year just to wait for the RC to expire.

Two weeks and its perfect? oh well, end of story :)

You are just a small part of the demograph that makes up the big picture though.
Never the less, that's when they say these public copys will expire. I never made that up, its in the EULA for RC1.

Some people with different hardware to you are having problems.

I actually think its good they are taking their time, this time, dont you?
