I dont need litescribe or bluray or anything fancy, i just want a simple optical drive.

In this case, should i go with the Samsung IDE DVD rewriter on novatech for aroun £17?

I use a Samsung SH-S223 DVD SATA writer, it's a great drive, can't fault it in any way...Another good purchase from Novatech

m8, the internet is full of clueless numpties who despatch advice like Quad is twice as fast as dual core, DDR2-1066 is 30% faster than DDR2-800 and SATA 300 is twice as fast as SATA 150, or NVidia make the fastest card and therefore a 9500GT is a good buy. Unfortunately, people end up wasting money because of this nonsense.

I wouldn't say IDE is better, just occasionally it has less issues on some RAID motherboards.

For DVD use and single hard drive, newer SATA and older IDE both have sufficient bandwidth. But SATA is where it's at these days. SATA drives tend to be mechanically more modern too, which is the real reason they are faster.

Lol, so the SATA one it is then.

I know this isnt really the right place, but while were on the topic, will the hard drive be SATA too.

regardless of whats better than what you dont want a massive IDE cable in your box they take up a huge amount of room.

get a sata hard drive< it doesnt matter about the dvd drive you can usually use and or on mobos atm< though hard drive wsie definately get a SATA<< theyre a lot faster and theyre cheap anyway so it doesnt matter.

That HDD is a good deal, most of the WD HDDs on nova are overpriced, but that in fact is cheaper than other places, and while the performance increase over the Green or Blue ranges will be fairly small, since its actually cheaper, go for it.
And, SATA HDD defo,
However, either is fine for the Optical Drive, I tend to think that IDE are a little faster, but not that it will have any impact on using it really. If you are bothered about having a massive IDE cable, you could just get the ones which are wrapped rather than straight, but that ofcourse costs more.
