friend of mine has started doing IT contracting, and is earning about twice what Im on,

hes been telling me about jobs hes been doing around the country and some of the benefits like claiming stuff off tax and that kind of thing, I have called up his boss and have a big load of forms to do to apply, and it all sounds very exciting.

does anyone here do IT contracting work?

what are the pros and cons of working this way?

Don't get paid holiday/sick or know when your next contract is comping up.

But, as you say - it pays more.

How would I get started with contracting? I guess it's similar to freelancing? Would using an agency be a good idea?

Register your CV with various jobsites, such as Jobserve. The more the merrier. In my experience, You will soon get plenty of phone calls, usually offering short term contracts. Once you've done a few then you will probably start getting offers of longer term work.
