I thought about it and realised that what this forum is missing is a Mac vs PC thread. They are always entertaining because they make people angry :)

Of course, this being a forum on a PC reseller website we all know that PC is better...

Depends what you want to do with em - I can see the appeal in both, I mean, PC's are pretty useless when its raining so i'd take the mac then, obviously.

Kinda says it all really

I know a few people who swear by mac's for their ability to do vid work straight off the real without any extra software, but me, I'll stick to my comp(s) any day.

I remember seeing a overview of mac's vs pc's. And the things that mac's were surposed to do better than pc's were done quicker on the pc.
think it was on the gadget show.
plus mac parts are harder to get replaced

Nox

no harder, just more expensive :)

Problem with people who use macs is they compare their £2000 machine that doesnt include a monitor to one you can pickup from PC world for £400 with a monitor.

They'll start saying how the components are better quality blah blah.
Well tbh they won't be that much better, the CPU will be intel (GJ You finally figured out the G5 sucks) and give me 2 grand to spend on a pc with quality components and i'll give you a grand back too.

I'd like to see what a MAC can do faster, aside from make you bankrupt.

A few myths...

You get a free os.
No you don't. That's already calculated in the price stupid!! If novatech put all their PC Prices up 100 pounds and sold them all with windows XP does that make windows XP free?

Pc's crash.
You obviously haven't used one since 1995. Win 95 crashed because pretty much everything ran in privilaged mode. If wanted you could have bought windows NT which wouldn't have crashed as much. Anyhow at least when an app does crash on my pc i can save. You get amused by a stupid spinning mouse icon which hypnotises you into thinking your mac is the best money you've ever spent.

Mac's are a better build quality
Oh dear, do you really think Apple manufactures all their own components?

I get very irritated by my wifes mac these days, its only one of those mini's but even still.

TBH, this is a bit of a pointless thread as no Mac user are really going to on here.

The latest Macs are intel based so they will run any flavour of Windows or Linux, so you have a system that will do anything really.

as a brand name computer maker they do engineer their stuff well.

If you like building, upgrading and modding PCs then the chances are you will never really be into Macs, as they use more specialist parts.

There is a cheesegrater Mac G5 thats used in house to make the N catalogue I remember LOL!!

its funny that Macs are used by industry standard for graphics and music work, as all the applications like Photoshop, Quark Express and Cubase are all available for Windows as well. :)

Yup, and my average barton 1700 out performed G5 1.8's we had at college in Cubase and Reason. So that's the "there's better for music myth out the way" £400 pound budget pc eats £1500 "super computer"
Only thing they can do is run logic audio which which apple bought and discontinued for the pc. If you want to run that you have to buy a mac.

Also iMovies used to crash with that annoying spinny hypo wheel all the time. Once that's up thats it, you gotta press the off button.

Pretty much all other software will run on a pc, and you could probably afford much better hardware too. Mac memory runs at 667mhz, nothing impressive. When you look at the money you could have left over to spend on some top of the line mushkin, corsair or something :p

I don't have anything against macs, i just wish mac owners would accept that they are average and not as good as they think they are.

Funny thing is, if someone said "I'm spending £1500 on a pc" most people would agree they are wasting their money and could build something almost as fast for half that price.
To spend that on a Mac is fine?

Also a lot of cubase work rely's heavily on plugins. Infact cubase without plugins doesn't do a lot.
You're screwed if the company doesn't make a mac version of the plugin.

You don't really need a Mac these days, my wifes brother used one to do all of his video editing and stuff, but now all of the things they could do that a PC couldn't/wouldn't now can at a fraction of the price.

Macs do look nice and clean, and the OS isn't by Microsoft which is a BIG plus!

Anyway, I just did the poll.....who chose Mac!!

Apparently.

Why do I never get one of them? It's all Apple spin I reckon.

Just like Apple is better for the interesting things and PC is better at spreadsheets. Just try a benchmark...

mac's are not rubbish.

I cant find a decent anti-virus. The Dell Norton is rubbish, and i have AVG and i think that one is good.

McAfee never tried
Norton OK Not DellNorton
AVG?

I don't have any antivirus or firewall.

Not one virus or instance of Spyware since I accidently clicked on the wrong thing during an install about a year ago. It's easy enough to reinstall.

Apple do have malware issues but it is very difficult to detect.

Friends that have Macs seem to enjoy tyhe fact that it is not a PC more than the fact that they are using a computer they enjoy using.

Windows just seems to be a more complete operating system. If you are the sort of person that uses 'catergory view' for the control panel then please please please go and buy a mac and save me the hassle of explaining how to do anything and everything. I feel that with Windows and a custom PC I am building the system that I choose and making it work in a way that I choose.

And i am going to build my own pc when my dell brakes.

I think macs are good but expensive.

Mac owners are like people who like "underground music"

i dont like underground music.

djgandy

What i mean by that, is that people will like anything that is different just to be different and get away from the mainstream.

novanick

Right,

I am not trying to be different i just like mac,and i love windows and linux.

But i cant afford a mac so i will stay with the PC.

I think Macs are aimed at people who buy expensive hifi gear, but each year Macs and PC are sharing more and more parts now they have x86 processors.

when people say about underground music I always think of the wombles LOL

Exactly. I think a lot of mac owners would be surprised at what a pc, that cost's half the price of a mac can do.
Sure a mac is faster than pc worlds flavour of the month, but thats hardly a comparison :p

Mac's don't come with high end graphics cards as standard either so that's not bumping their price up.
I'd be quite interested to rip a mac apart and see what is costing them so much.

Although deduct the price of windows xp for that "free" o/s you get.
That always makes me laugh when people say OSX is free.
Yes it's free, but its not use unless you cut off your right leg and swap it for a mac.
