Basically after a new DVD writer; must be SATA connection, lightscribe would be a bonus but not essential.
Any suggestions as to which offers the best performance for the price, the numbers etc mean nothing to me :wall:

Thanks.

Samsung SH-S223 is a great drive, found it very reliable.

Optiarc unit performs well, L/S capable, cost around the same as the Sammy's.

Thanks guys, found a couple of Optiarc ones on Novatech.

This one is a bit slower but has LS http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?OPT-7201S

Or this faster one without LS http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?OPT-7240S

Edit - Just found this Samsung drive with LS and retail boxed with Nero for less than £23 http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?SAM-S223Q#

Buy the slower one, nobody burns at max speed for obvious reasons, the Nero addition in the Samsung one is a bonus but it will be a 50/50 version, i.e some stuff will work all the time and other bits will be trial basis, still knowing the Opti unit doesn't have Nero included I suppose the Sam is the one to go for.

Lies! I do :p

I've always burnt at max speed and I've so far, never encountered a single problem.

I've had a Samsung S223Q for quite some time now. The first two I had failed within a month of me owning them and I didn't even use them often! I burnt about 3 DVDs. However, my replacement drives (both new) have been as good as gold for the last 6 months. However, the other one seems to be a bit flakey again so I think it may require another RMA! :(

Thanks for all the help, probably going to go for the boxed Samsung; hopefully wont have any of the issues that you did ;)
Just need to wait for it to come back in stock.

I believe it was due to a firmware issue which has been resolved since then.

I just noticed I used "however" a bit to much lol :p

Another vote for the Samsung drive here. Just brilliant. Though I did update the firmware, as a Samsung rep on another forum got everyone to do it, as they were reporting some issues with drives dying prematurely. (or something like that). If you do buy the Samsung, make sure it has the latest firmware, and do some reading on the issue.
