Plese note, I have also sent an email to tech supoort but thought a forum member may help.
Customer number 44533734
Suddenly, when I switched the laptop on , when Windows tried to load as far as the Logo with the green "ticker",after some time the screen went blank and I get the message
"Stop c0000221 (bad image checksum) The image SHLWAPI.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum."
I have tried to start in safe mode in all options with the same result.
I have been pointed to Microsoft who suggest its the RAM. I had a RAM upgrade in April 2006 so am a bit suspicious it may be this.
I don't want to reinstal windows from the recovery disc, I had to do this before (in June) to fix another memory bug. Are all laptops like this or just mine? My desktop rolls on and on, but this laptop is not so good.
Luckily I have the desktop here in Spain so I can pen this post.
Any ides? Thanks in advance J

I've seen this error before (a different .dll) and it was the hard drive. I recommend trying another drive if you have one.
If there is any chance that the memory may be playing up, if you can, try taking all memory out then do any of the following: insert one module into one of the slots (if there is more than one slot)[/*:m:37apnai0]
insert one module into the other slot[/*:m:37apnai0]
try the above two points with a different module (repeat as necessary!)[/*:m:37apnai0]
try using only the original memory (before you upgraded)[/*:m:37apnai0]It is worth a try as it could save you a few hours of reinstallation and loss of data!

Thanks Aubs
I tried all that and then even put the two modules back but in different hols. Nothing changed I'm afraid.
Novatech say to reinstall windows from the recovery disc. Can you, or anyone else, see an alternative. I supppose it will proove the hard disc one way or another.
Thanks again
Out of curiosity, have you looked at either of these sites:
http://www.techimo.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-131070.html
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/390314-xp-wont-open.html
These came from a quick google (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rls=GGLG%2CGGLG%3A2005-30%2CGGLG%3Aen&q=Stop+c0000221+bad+image+checksum+The+image+SHLWA PI.dll+is+possibly+corrupt.+The+header+checksum+do es+not+match+the+computed+checksum&btnG=Search&meta=). I think the first one in the list is actually yours on another forum but I might be wrong!

Thanks Aubes
Its taken me ages to work through that first set of posts - and it all happened in 2004. My problem is identical except the laptop I have is only a year old and has / had windows XP sp2.
Another person had the identical problem this year but didn't get a response. This wasn't me, by the way, and was all new.
I'm going to have a look at the other one but first a word with Novatech if I can get them on the phone, it being Friday and all.
Cheers again

Just to say thanks everyone on the forum, but not so good a response from Novatech, who seem to have ignored me for more than 4 days. I tried phoning but got the engaged tone. I suppose because I'm in Spain they can't phone me.
Anyway, I have bitten the bullet and reinstalled Windows from the recovery disc - second time in 4 months. Both reinstals caused by bad memory problems.
There seem to be more .dll problems than I would have expected. If its true then why are there no fixes except reformatting the hard drive?
So now I have been at the reinstal and downloading updates for what seems hours. I am one fed up person.
Anyway, thanks all those who gave some advice. Very much appreciated.

Hey Freaky
No I don't I'm afraid. I guess it would be a simple thing to find out.
I suppose Novatech, who have my customer number, would be able to tell or I could have the cover off and have a look.
What did you have in mind?

Thanks for the info freaky. I'll do that. I certainly don't want to spend another half day reinstalling and downloading updates etc etc. The gauling bit is the way Windows keeps on offering me a tour .....
Cheers
j
The gauling bit is the way Windows keeps on offering me a tourI guess you like the "Click here to start" balloon on the Start Menu that appears a couple of minutes AFTER you've already launched your first program from the Start Menu! or the "You have unused items on your desktop" that irritates me because any icons on my desktop were putt here because I want them!
HeHe
Anyways, good luch with your quest - to find the HD manufacturer, reboot your PC and press F1 or F2 to enter the BIOS setup. There should be an entry in there somewhere that tells you the make/model
Alternatively Click Start --> Settings --> Control Pannel --> Administrative Tools --> Computer Management. Select "Storage --> Disk Management from the list on the left and right click on C: drive, select Properties then the hardware tab should give you a model number or something related. Doh. that's also available if you open my computer, right click on C: select Properties then the hardware tab and as above
