Hi I'm buying a Novatech 7900 GTX 512mb card and I'm wondering if my PSU is up to the job of powering it or should I be looking at a new PSU? I'm also buying a new motherboard thats PCI-E compatible obviously.
Apparently the card requres 22A on the 12V rail - I currently have an XPro 460W PSU that I bought from Novatech a couple of years ago, according the technical specs on XPro's website it can supply 30A on the +12V rail.
Do you think this is sufficient or should I be looking at purchasing a 500W plus PSU?

What other pieces of equipment are you running with this power supply
Full spec please :D
But im guessing that if you want to be on the safe side then an upgrade wouldnt harm the bank too much.
A quality 480W or 500+W wouldnt go under appreciated.

Ooh I forgot to mention these:
Creative Audigy2 ZS soundcard
Hauppage PVR-150 capture card
Dialup modem on a small PCI card
4 extra ports USB card which I don't use, can't remember the name it's been a while. I could remove it.
Plus the usual things plugged into the USB ports i.e. USB modem, PS2 joypad, etc.
Thanks for the reply 8)

Oh! Thats odd I listed the rest of my stats in my sig but its not showing up? Oh well never mind here you go: :)
AMD Athlon 3400 Newcastle socket 754
HDD's: 2x 200gb Maxtor DiamondMax 9, 1x 300gb Maxtor DiamondMax 9 or 10 I can't remember.
2x 1GB Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR400
NEC 2500 DVD writer
I currently have an MSI KN8 Neo Platinum mobo (AGP) but I'm buying a Gigabyte GA-K8NE (PCI-E). I know, I know it's a budget board but I'm loathe to fork out for top range board just now it's a stop gap to be honest - in a couple of years when the graphix card wants replacing I'll go the whole hog and invest in a new AM2 processor and SLI mobo etc. But for now I reckon my socket 754 processor has a couple of years life left in it yet and besides I'm on a tight budget just now: I've just shelled out for a 20" LG L2000C TFT monitor (which I can heartily recommended BTW) and I'm seriously out of pocket.

I think I'll wait and see what happens. Any kind of glitches or other kind of trouble I'll be picking up a new PSU.

The X-Pro is a quality PSU, christm it aint gold, and when they fist came out, the 460 was £45+
Anyway, Yes it would still be fine, but maybe an ATX2 compliant PSU would be more suitable, rather than one that is only ATX1/1.1. Reason i say that is you might need a power adaptor for the main board connector.

Thanks for the reply. Well this is an update: rebuild of new mobo and graphix card were successfully completed yesterday. I've yet to have an intense gaming session but so far everything is hunky dory. No glitches or problems whatsoever. :)
My PSU has 3 lines with molex connectors attached: 2 of them are now now exclusively dedicated to the graphix card and the 3rd powers everything else: i.e. the hard drives and DVD-writer. Hopefully that'll be ok as they're not all active at the same time. It was interesting to get my PC to bits again see how everythings faired over the last couple of years and generally marvel at the amount of dust that manages to collect inside it. Wow graphics cards are enormous nowadays I'll have to get a bigger case on my next build I think.
Yes I thought the XPro was a decent PSU, it cost me more but I've had my fair share of cheap PSU's go bang on me in the past, never again.

Daedalus - Hope that you're still monitoring this thread...I am in the *exact* same situation as you, K8N Neo motherboard and Athlon 3400, looking to move to a Gigabyte GA-K8NE and a 7900.
I was curious of a few things. Are you still using your 2 gigs of corsair on your new gigabyte board? If so, what speed are they running? I have read that DDR400 sticks will be automatically clocked down to DDR333 when run in this type of setup.
Also, do you happen to know what revision your GA-K8NE is? I see on gigabyte's support page for the board, they have a bios update that specifically lists "geforce 7900 support added", but only for the revision 2 board. It looks like novatech only sells the revision 1, if the picture is accurate.
Thanks

whats the difference. chances are if there is a small difference they get wrong image or kept same page but scrapped the rv1 for the rv2? just a guess.

I just want to make sure that if I get a 7900 and a GA-K8NE, the board will actually support the vid card. The fact that gigabyte specifically mentions the 7900 in their bios fix for rev2 but -not- for rev1 makes me think that's one of the key differences. maybe there is some weird incompatibility if you match up a rev1 board with a 7900 card.
so...if daedalus is running smooth w/ his setup, i'll just make sure to get the same rev that he has :D
