Recently I stopped being able to burn using various packages on my HL-DT-ST GWA-4040N drive so I formatted think it was an issue after installing vista beta (immediate thought was - serves me right) so I got a copy of XP64 and clean installed however I am still unable to burn CD or DVD and have tried several different media brands. The burn process seems to go alright until near the end of the process where it fails.

I have switched of the XP burning ability and disabled the IMAPI CD burning service to no avail.

Looking online a few other people seem to have had issues with this drive recently (last 6 - 9 months) and there are a few reports that flashing the drive firmware has resolved the issue.

There are a few firmware flashers out there (http://tdb.rpc1.org/#GWA4040N) however I need to know which one to pick, can you advise what the current firmware is based on.

If flashing the firmware does not work my next step will be to replace the drive so, question two.

Can you recommend a few drives from your stock and provide me instructions on fitting please. I think I can see how to remove the current drive however I want to make sure especially if I have to completely disassemble the case. Was looking at the Order Code: UNI-DVDRWS

I have also decided that if I am opening the laptop this would be the ideal time to up the RAM. Do I have the spare capacity for another GB stick, if so can you link to relevant pages on your site for ordering and again, if not covered in instructions above, tell me how to get into the case.

Cheers!
