They need to get in 65nm and up the cache.

But if you remember, the AMD's always had less cache, and clock speed, but always outperformed the equivilent intel cpu's.
I agree 65nm would overclock more, but im not sure about cache size, but 1mb should be standard :D
They look pretty much exactly the same speed as their old cpu's... ie thier top of the range is 3.0Ghz, it was only 2.8 before wasn't it?

Yeah, pretty much the point i was making. They've not actually changed anything fundamentally. Just stuck some different names on the box. Core2 is a completely new approach from Intel. AMD are going to struggle to catch up, and then beat intel with their current product line. Infact we know they can't.
OMG amd CPU at 3ghz non overclocked! im am actully drooling, :D any one know the rough price yet? i take it there gonna be skt am2?
AMD GIMMIE ONE I TEST IT FOR U? PLZ!!

It says what socket it is
AM2 and skt 1207 (server) are the 3ghz cpu's

intel are allready there with a cpu that has more instructions per cycle and a higher overclock potential.
its just more expensive, generally.

I guess that it then, no more opterons for non server mainboards.****, i wanted some quad core loving, but now if i want that i would have to get a server board and server memory :(

err you do realise that the oc potential will be like 0. lol

how come the lower ones aare 65nm and not the top ones?

probably energy efficient ones at the bottom, even though the semprons are 90nm  and they are at the very bottom :P

AMD badly need to sort out the PR system. It used to work, but now it is very misleading. I'd love to see how a x2 6000+ would be as fast as a core2duo clocked at 6.0ghz.

maybe a amd 6600+ (if there is 1) is same as core 2 duo e6600

what do you mean no overclock! anything can be overclocked! even the intel stuff which were suposed to be locked, and the other guy who said intel already made the 3hz mark, they may be 3 ghz but amd are still a serious competitor and most of theres are around 2.5! the ghz isnt all the counts, generally amd has been lower thats why they write it as 3800 and intel would write somthing like 3.8ghz, but to see a amd at 3ghz non overclocked is awsome, just awsome

I will wait for benches before presuming anything :D

The reason AMD were using the rating system was because they were performing more instructions per clock than an equivalent intel chip, so your amd running at 2Ghz was running (roughly) as many instructions per second as an intel at 3.2Ghz, hence the 3200 rating, but to get this rating a lot more things were taken into consideration, onboard memory controller etc etc.
Now bring in the new Intel chips - they run more instructions per clock than an amd cpu, thus a conroe running at 2.0ghz will be faster than an amd running at 2.0, but *some* of this difference is countered by amd's onboard memory controller. Now not only do intel have a higher core speed, but they are processing more instructions per clock, hence the amd's getting a battering.
Are you still with me? :D
This is partly why, an intel 6600 (2.4Ghz) is faster than an fx-62 (2.8Ghz) in some tests:

and that link shows an amd 2.8 (lets face it, almost 3.0Ghz) being hammered by intels lowest clock 4mb cache cpu. (under most tests)

Intel are winning, just face it
even though AMD are still very good with memory bandwidth due to their onboard memory controller
