Hello, has any one come across this?
my new computerr (as below) is less than a week old, at first it would shut down OK using the normal turn off button.
Bur it now just restarts, so i need to turn off the power when the screen dies.
Any thoughts please?

ive seen of this problem before and i think it turned out to be wake on lan (witch mean pc will turn on when there is lan activerty)
Right click My Computer
Select Properties
Go to Hardware Device
Click Device Manager
Select Network Adapters
Select Marvell Yukon .....PCI-Fast Ethernet Controller
right click properties
power management
deselect Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
Go to Advanced tab
put value off for Wake from shut down
value none for Wake up capabilities
press OK
you could try this but if that dont work check your bios and do
Network boot [Disable] then save.
not sure if this will fix your problem 100% but its what ive seen so hopefully it should be ok

Yes machine was set to auto reboot after a crash, I have changed that but the problem is still there.
Thanks for you post.

What do you mean by power button?
The power button in the windows start menu or the power button the computer case?

Sorry, I meant the mains 13 amp power socket

Just to add to the message above, if I go to windows start menu, select turn off computer, then click Turn off, the computer should turn off, but it restarts, unless I turn off the mains 13 amp power socket when the screen goes blank.
This is strange because it did turn off OK just now, but not now again :-(

Is it considerd OK to turn off the computer by holding in the Main Power Button on the front of the computer, instead of by the start menue?
Barry
these days it's considered not so bad (but still not ideal)!
It was only really the early GUI operating systems that you didnt want to be doing it too often and as they have moved on, they are a lot more robust.

Still not ideal tho is it?
Wouldn't it be better to use the windows shut down and then hit the power button on the box just before it spins back up again? Kill it before it gets to the bios.
Are there any messages in the logs?
You could of course try a clean install, if it is a software/OS error that should solve it.

This is a fresh install, I installed it one week ago, but I could start again.

Right click on my computer, select manage, the logs are listed in there, can't remember what the top level is called now but they are pretty obvious. Check the system logs first.

OK thanks, i have found them, but they do not make any sence to me :-(
I think I will just switch it off at the wall socket for now.
Many thanks to all for your help.

I don't know if its the same on XP, try and follow this, but it may be slightly different (I'm on Vista)
Go to the ControlPanel, and look for the power settings, then look around at changing them, there may be an option to select what the power button does...

may just be worth setting the computer to just turn off when you press the power button on the case.

Many thanks TimW & Baggpus for the suggestion.
I changed the power button to "shut down" but the computer still restarts
It is still only possable to realy turn it off by shutting down and then turn off the power plug at the wall when the screen goes blank.
Do you think it could be a hardware problem?
he computer is only around 10 days old.

Is your network card plugged into anything, looking back through the posts wake on LAN could still be a possibility. Try unplugging network leads and see if it still happens.
Try looing here there are a number of suggestions:

Many thanks for all help & suggestions, but I think I will just have to live with the problem.
I just turn off at the power socket when windows shuts down and before it restarts.

have you tried a system restore point? (if you have made one)
this may help, you have have just hit something, and not relised. this may cure your problem.
safe mode it with 'F5' or 'F8' (depending on system) and see if the problem still acours.
LAST RESORT: back up HDD and get refund at the shop. or see if the shop will repair it under warranty.

When you say windows starts again is it actually starting windows or is it not powering down,ie hard drive stops but power stays on. I had this with a similar system and it was the power supply.
