I know there are a couple of topics on this already but none really answered the question I have and I didn;t want to hi-jack the other posts so...

I have an Canon IP4300 printer hooked up to my main PC (running Vista) via USB. I have a Vista Laptop which I want to also want to be able to print from but not when my main rig is on.

I know the easiest way is to buy a print server but I simply dont have the cash so was wondering, If I were to get a USB to RJ45 converter, could I then not plug the RJ45 end into my wireless router? Would I be able to connect to the printer that way?

Cheers for the help!

so you would be just buying a wired print server instead of a wireless one?
yes they are cheaper and yes it will share the printer over your wireless network
you might want to reserve an ip address for the print server, in your router settings, so that when you install a network printer on your pc and laptop, it will always have the same path.

good luck

Not a wired print server.

You can buy a device that converts usb into an rj45 connection, something like this: http://www.b2cshop24.com/en/10-100-mbps-usb-to-rj45-ethernet-network-lan-adapter.html?language=en&currency=GBP

yes but without a print server, you wouldnt be able to give the printer an ip address (unless it has built in network interface)

so your setup would fail
