Having just about finished Uni and starting work soon I am looking for a phone I can use to browse the web whilst making the tedious 1.5hour train journey to work and then back again. Which phone would you recommend and why? What are the best and worst features of each please?

The iPhone has the App Store, which can provide endless hours of entertainment. The Android has apps, but no where near as many, and it will never catch up to amount of Apps the iPhone has.

I've had an iPhone for just over a month and am loving it so far. It's an amazing piece of kit with so many features. In fact the last thing I use it for is a Phone lol, and if I did have to find fault with it I would say that (at the moment) the lack of things like MMS and proper bluetooth don't make it very good to use as a phone.
Obviously that will be vastly improved once OS 3.0 is released
+1 for the iPhone. I'd be lost without mine. I've alwys got phones in the past thinking, I could use the various features, Calander, Mp3 players, etc but never have. The iphone is so easy to use. I probably could get a lot more than I do out of it.
I've never actually seen an Android phone.

I'm in the same boat. Having a very usable internet available on a phone is very appealing. Much prefer the idea of the android software being open source.
