Why does my USB Port look different

Hi guys,

I purchased a brand new Acer Aspire 5750Z laptop a couple of weeks ago. First thing I noticed is how one of the USB Ports looks different than the rest. If you look at it straight on you can see 4 visible holes going across the port whereas the other ports just look smooth.

I have reffered back to the manual and I seem to think it's a USB 3.0 Port but I'm not to sure. The USB port works and functions fine I'm just concerned as to why it looks different than usual.

Any idea why it looks like this?

your camera has focused on the background

is it blue? all USB 3 ports are coloured blue to distinguish them from older ones.

It is indeed USB 3 and its backwards compatible with USB 2.

No the port isn't blue.

It's just strange because if you look inside other USB Ports, the front of them are 'smooth' and you can't see the 4 holes displayed on mine.

The other 2 USB Ports I have on my laptop look just like normal ports.

As said I'm just a bit confused as to why this one looks different. Also if I look inside the port, on the 'floor' of it their is an extra bracket in the middle.

could be SATA-USB port?

ignore the colour, does it look like the 2 middle strange looking ports? (under the single red USB ports)

It actually looks more like those red ports to be honest. I know the weird looking port on my laptop certainly isn't eSATA.

Strangely the specs sheet says it has 3 USB2 slots, but there is USB3 drivers on the download page?

Yeah there is USB3 Drivers and I installed them. I have taken a better picture of the port if that helps. Ofcourse USB's fit in the port and work fine. Just confused as to why it looks different.

no idea to be honest, i didn't even notice the differences between the ports on my motherboard. (also got those two yellow-red-blue columns)

open device manager and see if you have USB3 controller, if spec page says it's USB3 and you have installed drivers, then it most probably is USB3.

Just to update.

I contacted Acer tech support about this, the woman I spoke to didn't really seem to know much of what I was on about though.

She said the port I'm referring to is a dual firewire/USB Port.

Does this sound right? :S

look at the image i posted earlier, the yellow ports are firewire (large one normal old, small one micro newer). the dimensions are completely different from USB.

Red/Black - USB1.1 / 2
Blue - USB 1.1 / 2 / 3

Looks like the combined Firewire/USB port on my HP Pavilion, if that helps
